Where are you from?
We're from Phoenix, AZ USA. I (Ken) was raised in Germany though and moved back to Phoenix in 1995,
where I was born also.
What's the meaning/idea of your band-name "Intuition"?
Well, to be honest there's not much of a meaning behind it. It sounded cool and it was available.
There are a lot of bands out there, so finding a name that was available wasn't all that easy. ;-)
Your music is dominated by very melodic and great vocals.
How important is the singing and which role does the musical background play?
We think that vocals are the most important 'instrument' in a song.
The music can be as good as it gets, but if the vocals aren't good the song suffers.
Of course the music is important as well, but to us the vocal melodies and vocals themselves
are the most important part of an Intuition track.
"Further" is your debut album which was released in 2003 by the most famous SynthPoP label "A Different Drum".
Please tell me something about the young history of Intuition? (Where did you meet, etc. ...)
After my vocalist left my old band Intact, I was in desperate need for a new singer.
I found Garrett through mp3.com where I had heard some of his older stuff.
I thought "man this guy can really sing!" So I decided to email him and I asked him if he's still doing music.
We met, got along with each other right away, had the same ideas about music and decided we should try to do
something together. Things worked out really well and we got signed to release an album on ADD after demoing a few songs to them.
That's pretty much it J.
What are your reasons for producing romantic electronic music?
We both like uplifting music. When I am in a bad mood,
I could never listen to depressing music. I guess Depeche Mode is one of a few exceptions.
I think it's very important to us to send a good message to people, to make them feel better about themselves.
We try to write songs that give the listener hope instead of telling them "sorry there's no sense in living anymore!"
I don't understand that sort of music at all to be honest. Bottom line though, it's all about the chicks J.
Who inspires your music?
All kind of things in life. Love, Hope, Faith, Relationships, Friends, etc.
For the most parts your songs are about love.
Do the lyrics reflect your own experiences, disaffection with existing situations or are they pure fiction?
Of course they do reflect experiences. I think that's the great thing about making music,
you can write about your own experiences and you can be almost certain that there's
someone else out there who can relate. Of course there have been a few times when we just needed a good pop song.
Some bands try to reach a very special audience.
What kind of audience do you want to reach?
We would like to reach more of a mainstream audience, young or old, it really doesn't matter.
We think it would be very limiting to say that we are a "SynthPoP band" if "SynthPoP" is being
refered to as anything more than a band who happens to use synthesizers and happens to play pop music.
We do use synthesizers to make pop music, but we aren't really into any particular scenes.
Of course we love Depeche Mode and stuff like that, but we love Savage Garden, U2, Avril Lavene, Robbie Williams,
Dido and artists of that kind just the same. In fact, we are really writing in the vein of the latter artist currently.
Keane is someone who has our attention right now as well.
Ken, you told me that you came from Germany (Giessen).
Some of the ADD releases are not available in Mid-Europe? Especially Amazon Germany doesn't have your releases in stock.
Have you also reached a great number of German / Austrian or Swiss audience?
Our CD's can be purchased through various stores in Europe.
Intrapop, SPR, Music Non Stop, Hot Stuff all sell our CD's, to name a few.
I am not sure how great the number of fans is that we've reached thus far in Europe.
We get a few emails or guestbook comments once in while from people overseas, which is very cool.
Are you going to have live-gigs in near future?
Yes, we're doing a show in Minnesota in July, one in Phoenix, AZ in August
and one in Salt Lake City, UT in September just to name a few.
After the single release "Two" and the debut album "Further",
I am very much looking forward to further releases.
What are your future plans and especially the plans with A
Different Drum?
We just finished our new single called "Staring Off At Nothing" which will be available late July, early August.
This is a brand new single of our forthcoming second album (name TBA), which should be out later this year.
We're gonna continue to write new songs and see where it goes from there.
As far as ADD goes, there aren't any specific plans really.
I think you could say that we're going to release CD's under ADD as long as both parties are happy
with each other, which so far seems to work out great.
Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to talk to you!
Now enjoy some one minute samples of the brand-new single "Staring Off At Nothing" and the debut album "Further".
