Where do you come from?
We're all based in Toronto, Canada. Me and my brother Rob
live in Mississauga, which is a suburb of Toronto known for
its popular, oversized movie theatres.
What are your jobs - only musicians?
Me and Wolf are studying Music at the university. I'm planning
on teaching English literature in high schools if music doesn't work out.
Rob works as a software developer.
We all dream of composing/producing/breathing music professionally one day.
Why did you decide to name your band "Eden Ants"?
It was actually the name of one of the first songs we had
written.
I had the title written in a notebook lying on my bed and Rob
walked in and said:
"Eden Ants.... that would be a good band name." And
so it was. I feel it accurately embodies our style and direction.
When I listened to "Losing Touch" the first time, I thought that you
come from Germany, as your music sounds like proper German Synth.
What are your reasons for making SynthPoP?
*laugh* Well.... that's flattering considering I'm a
big fan of German electronic music. Since the beginning, I've tried to include
the sense of a European-folk sound into all our songwriting... perhaps that
is what you pick up on. Good for you! *laugh*
We never wanted to make 'SynthPoP'. Eden Ants started with a desire to
make the most cutting edge rock music possible. Being fans of
SynthPoP bands such as Apoptygma Berzerk, Echo Image, De/Vision, Mesh, and VNV
Nation, it is easy to hear our influence as well as our unique rock flavour.
We consider ourselves electronic pop rock.
"Losing Touch" and "Survive" are very danceable songs which based on
well-tried SynthPoP architectures. Please describe your music in your own words.
What do you want to express with your music? What are your aims?
I try to write music that is familiar enough to easily enjoy
but original enough to keep you interested. It can be a rather
difficult balance at times.
The lyrics often write themselves based on my current state.
I'm particularly fascinated with human nature and the small things
that most people never notice. I'm actually a better musician than a
poet..... I think. *laugh*
Being the main songwriter, I've always tried to be as honest
and relevant as I could. Eden Ants strives to write music that is solid
with or without the electronics. All songs are written first on an acoustic
guitar before a single electronic element is added. This ensures a good
quality tune every time.
As you know the 80s were formed by SynthPoP (for example Depeche Mode,
New Order, Marc Almond, Erasure, OMD, and others ...). Do you think that
SynthPoP will have a second chance in the 2000s?
I sure hope so. We like to imagine that SynthPoP will make a
mainstream revival within the next few years in the North American market.
However, 'hip hop' has a tight hold on the market
here making it difficult for us, and other electro-pop talent, to secure
a major label deal. Our European popularity is a sure sign
of SynthPoP's success across the sea.
I got your 2 songs via Audio-Galaxy.
How do you think about Audio-Galaxy? Does it really destroy the music-business
(Slogans like Copy Kills Music) or is it an useful tool for artists to make their music
public? Do you also use Audio-Galaxy?
Our impressive internet fan base is a complete result of our
ability to freely share our music via the doomed Napster and other such
file-sharing programs. We assumed that most fans would get our music from our site
(www.edenants.com)
but we find that many listeners use other means. We advocate any method in which
we can share our music with new listeners. We also use music-sharing programs regularly..
but please don't tell the cops.*laugh*
You had some shows in 2000 and 2001. What are your future plans
concerning shows and new releases?
We plan on becoming kings of the electro-pop scene in the next few
years. Things are only getting bigger and better all the time. So we'll sit back,
hold on, and enjoy the ride until then.
Many Thanks to Adymm Ender for the interview and for sharing the following songs by Eden Ants.
